Overview of the 2023 vs. 2024 Ford Mustang

The 2024 Ford Mustang had found the comfortable balance of making meaningful updates to the 2023 Ford Mustang while retaining many of the components of the classic muscle car that so many drivers love.

The new model's style is reworked while remaining familiar. It features newly designed chassis hardware, an all-new interior, and two upgraded powertrains from previous years.

Even more updates are on the horizon for the Ford Mustang, but for now, the new iteration of the classic car continues to be powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 that now outputs up to 480 horsepower. The 315-horsepower turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost is an upgrade from previous years. Both powertrains are paired with a 10-speed automatic. If you want a manual, you’ll have to go with the V-8.

Additionally, both hardtop coupe and soft-top convertible body styles are available in the 2024 Ford Mustang for those looking to feel the wind in their hair as they drive.

New in 2024

The 2023 Ford Mustang boasts strong visual appeal, with a powerful design accented by a sleek roofline, diamond-shaped headlights, and a horizontal foglight bar. The 2024 Ford Mustang goes for an edgier look with a beefed-up hood, squared sides, and a sharply curved roofline. The redesigned, geometric-shaped grille and horizontal tri-bar LED headlights are sure to turn heads.

Many claim that the new model was overdue, and even more are thrilled with the available Performance Pack offered on both the Mustang GT and EcoBoost models. The Performance Pack includes a front strut-tower brace, Torsen limited-slip differential, wider wheels and tires, larger Brembo brakes, and a MagneRide active-dampening suspension Additionally, Recaro bucket seats are available for those who want to emphasize the performance of the vehicle.

On top of all that, the new Mustang Dark Horse is a track-ready model with an incredible 500-horsepower Coyote V-8 engine and impressive equipment upgrades. The Dark Horse is the epitome of raw power and strikes an imposing figure on the road.

The Mustang’s Engine and Performance

When it comes to engines, the old and new models both offer the choice of an EcoBoost turbo 2.3-liter, inline-four engine, although the 2024 model’s engine packs a more significant punch. The standard engine on the new Ford Mustang boasts 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque.

Every EcoBoost Mustang is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, while the GT is standard with a six-speed manual.

The new 2024 Dodge Mustang’s V8 engine produces an incredible 480 horsepower, 30 more than the 2023 Mustang GT. For additional power, the 2024 Mustang GT can be equipped with an active-valve exhaust system which adds another 6 horsepower to the mix.

The new Mustang Dark Horse model is a step up from the GT when it comes to the track, coming with a six-speed manual Tremec TR-3160 transmission that helped it go from 0 to 150 mph in only 29.7 seconds.

Fuel Economy in the Ford Mustang

When it comes to fuel economy, you can still expect better from this car than their larger counterparts. The EPA estimates that the four-cylinder Mustang can get 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The Performance Package, as you might expect, lowers that rating slightly, but not as much as you might expect, only dropping to 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.

The V-8 rates lower, with an EPA rating of 15 mpg city and 24 mpg highway, the same as in previous years. The Mustang GT with a six-speed manual rates at 14 mpg city and 23 mpg highway, while the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse has the lowest rating at just 14 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

Interior and Comfort

Another one of the differences between the 2023 and 2024 Ford Mustang is the interior. In the new model, the front seats are “fighter-jet inspired,” according to Ford. This means, ultimately, the seats are supportive and comfortable.

The 2024 Ford Mustang comes with a 12.4-inch instrument cluster as one of the major interior differences between the 2023 and 2024 models. The display is configurable to fit the needs of the driver, with selectable colors, gauges, and a “calm” screen that shaves down the display to only what is necessary. Ambient lighting and a driver’s display adapt to the selected drive mode.

Base models come with cloth seats and available micro-suede vinyl inserts. The Premium level adds more stitching, while the Mustang GT upgrades to leather inserts. Other features include a heated steering wheel, a premium B&O sound system, a navigation system, parking sensors, and luxurious leather materials.

Infotainment

Another area of update is the technology inside the cabin of the 2024 Ford Mustang. An available 13.2-inch infotainment system uses Ford’s Sync 4 software to flow from the gauge cluster toward the center of the car behind a curved glass panel. The controls for the Mustang’s climate system are integrated into the central display screen as well.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and drivers can choose to upgrade to an optional wireless smartphone charger.

In addition to the technology of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Amazon Alexa and Ford Streaming allow voice commands that replace knobs to turn and buttons to press. Every 2024 Ford Mustang also comes with Ford Power-Up software capabilities that allow the latest software updates over the air.

Safety Features in the Mustang

Becoming increasingly popular, The 2024 Ford Mustang adds more driver-assistance technology than most of its competitors, allowing you to go faster and feel safer. As a standard feature, Ford Co-Pilot360 is available on every 2024 Ford Mustang.

Other key safety features include reverse auto braking, adaptive cruise control, pothole mitigation (available in the Performance Package), lane center assist, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist.
