Last updated June 27th, 2023

If you're shopping for a vehicle nowadays, odds are you're considering gas mileage more than you may have a year or two ago. High gasoline prices - not to mention just about everything else - have Fort Dodge residents considering gas mileage when shopping for a new vehicle. Toyota is a very popular brand because their cars are reliable. Luckily for Iowa drivers, they also make a wide variety of hybrid vehicles! It’s abundantly clear that Toyota is a master at producing fuel-efficient vehicles. The milestones are almost shocking, however.

Did you know that Toyota made the first mass-produced Hybrid vehicle to hit the market? Toyota has always been concerned with your fuel costs at the pump and has been defining the forefront of the fuel-efficiency competition with hybrid vehicles since 1997.

With this incredible tenure comes perfection in producing hybrid vehicles, but fuel-efficient vehicles in general. There’s no other way to say it: Toyota has mastered the art of producing a fuel-efficient car.

Toyota took its time to perfect the plug-in hybrid before releasing its first hybrid model for the 2012 model year. Still a pioneer in the fuel efficiency market, Toyota worked out all the kinks of this technology before releasing the perfected version to the public. Continuing to push the boundaries of the auto market with care for consumers' fuel costs, Toyota has pledged to go all hybrid or all-electric with their lineup by the 2025 model year. We can speculate as to whether this means gas-only models will be available then, but we do know one thing. Toyota cars will get better and better at being the fuel-efficient machines they already are.

The Ultimate Verdict: Toyota Cars Ranked By MPG

When looking for the most fuel-efficient car, you won’t be surprised to find sedans at the top of this list. Fuel-efficient cars are usually smaller because there’s less weight that the engine has to carry along with it. Luckily for Fort Dodge drivers, fuel-efficient Toyota cars aren’t limited to just the smallest sedans. There are several Toyotas with excellent fuel economy – like, for example, the Toyota Prius Prime. Even many of the larger vehicles Toyota makes easily outcompete similar vehicles and are among the most fuel-efficient cars of their class on the market. If you’re looking for Toyota's best gas mileage, you’ll find it in the list below. We’ve ranked the currently available Toyota models by their fuel economy.

From this list, it's clear that Toyotas are fuel-efficient cars. Even their many trucks are offered in hybrid models! Below we’ll take a deeper dive into the most fuel-efficient options in each of the classes of vehicles Toyota has to offer. Before we do that, though, you may notice one thing. The hybrid cars on this list consistently get better fuel economy ratings.

Why Do Hybrid Vehicles Get Better Fuel Economy?

Some readers may wonder why some hybrid vehicles do better in the city than on the highway. For traditional cars, this is different from the case. This reverse of optimal fuel efficiency is because hybrid cars utilize regenerative braking technology. When you brake in a hybrid, the car captures some of the energy created by friction and uses it to top off the battery. Since you brake more when driving in the city, this raises hybrid vehicles' city fuel ratings. Always keep in mind that even though hybrid cars do have better mileage overall, all-wheel-drive models of these vehicles make fewer miles per gallon than their two-wheel-drive counterparts.

Fuel-Efficient Toyota SUVs

New Toyota Rav4 in Fort Dodge, IA

SUVs have become the lifeblood of the current car market. It’s easy to see when you look on the roads today. It’s no surprise that these cars have taken America by storm. They’re practical, and you don’t need a tiny one to have excellent fuel economy, either. Below you’ll find some of the most fuel-efficient SUVs Toyota offers.

While this all-electric SUV is more of an honorable mention, it still is one of the Toyotas with technically the best fuel economy. While not using any fuel, it still has an MPGe almost as good as the Toyota Prius Prime. For an all-electric vehicle, this is more about the range of the overall vehicle than the gas mileage- because it uses no gas. This range difference between the bZ4X and the Prius Prime is because the Toyota bZ4X is larger. The size difference gives the bZ4X a slightly shorter range. While it’s no sports car by any stretch, the Toyota bZ4X still pushes a 6.4 second 0-60. With sleek styling and fuel efficiency all over, the bZ4X is a welcome addition to the fuel-efficient SUVs Toyota already offers.

The RAV4 is perhaps Toyota's most recognizable vehicle. This sleek two-row SUV has sharp, attractive lines that stand out. It is available as a standard gasoline-only SUV, a hybrid, and a Prime hybrid! The gasoline-only model, the 2023 Toyota RAV4, gets up to 27 miles to the gallon in the city and 35 on the highway. The hybrid models are where things get perfect, however. The 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid gets up to 41 mpg in the city and 38 on the highway, using the combination of traditional gasoline and two electric motors.

The 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime is a plug-in hybrid with a stunning 94 MPGe! Miles per gallon equivalent, mpgE, is a measure that allows electric-powered vehicles to be compared to standard ones. Introduced in 2021, the RAV4 Prime stands tall as an excellent, practical SUV at the pinnacle of fuel efficiency. It’s abundant proof that Toyota cars are moving in the direction of fuel efficiency, which saves consumers money in the long run.

The Toyota Highlander is a three-row SUV that appeals to Pocahontas drivers with large families or lots of cargo to haul. It can also be quite fuel efficient! The hybrid Highlander gets 36 mpg in the city and 35 on the highway. Even the non-electric 2023 Toyota Highlander gets 21 in the city and 29 on the highway.

Toyota Sedans with Great Gas Mileage

New Toyota Camry in Fort Dodge, IA

The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime. This plug-in hybrid sedan gets a whopping 133 mpgE - that will undoubtedly help you save at the pump! With the classic design we’ll discuss in a bit, the Prius Prime is the next in a series of Prius models that continue redefining what it means for a vehicle to have excellent fuel economy.

The 2023 Toyota Prius, a standard hybrid, also does very well. It scores 58 mpg in the city and 53 on the highway. Since 1997, Toyota has been producing this iconic hybrid vehicle. While the Prius may still have certain connotations, many of those stereotypes are fading fast as people look at prices at the pump. There’s no doubt that this car has excellent fuel economy and is a comfortable ride while doing it. While numerous updates and changes since the Prius was first released, it remains the fuel-efficient powerhouse it always was.

The 2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid gets 53 mpg in the city and 52 on the highway. For a solid midsized sedan, these are impressive stats. While the Corolla doesn’t have the same tenure that Camry has in the Toyota lineup, it’s still a fantastic choice for your next hybrid sedan.

The 2023 Toyota Camry gets 28 mpg in the city and 39 on the highway, while the hybrid gets 51 and 53, respectively.  These gas savings are difficult to pass up and make the hybrid Camry model even more attractive than its solely gas counterparts. If you’re looking for something discretely hybrid, the Camry might be right up your alley. With a serious change from gas-only to hybrid, it’s a difficult car to pass up by all accounts.

Toyota Sienna: The All-Hybrid Minivan

When looking for a new Toyota Sienna, you may notice that they are no longer offered in anything but hybrid models. This bold move by Toyota is a response to the current marketplace and can have larger-reaching impacts on the environment and the fuel market.

By making all of their minivans significantly more fuel efficient, Toyota has placed all buyers in a position where they no longer have to choose to pay high gas prices all the time. This shift towards only offering a hybrid in a particular model is part of what Toyota does best, pushing the marketplace to improve. However, while plug-in hybrid minivans exist and are without a doubt more fuel-efficient cars, Toyota understands that the charging may still be impractical for many busy families. The perfect balance has been struck with the Toyota Sienna being offered only in hybrid since the 2021 model year.

At 36MPG city and highway, this large vehicle produces outstanding numbers regarding fuel economy. With no worries about innovating too far beyond comfort but still pushing boundaries that save customers money, Toyota has made a hit with the all-hybrid Sienna as far as fuel economy is concerned.

Toyota Trucks: Defining the Future With Powerful Fuel Economy

Trucks are capable vehicles, but often could be better at the pump. That all changed recently with the addition of hybrid trucks to the market. However, Toyota seems to lead the marketplace with hybrid trucks. Especially with the addition of a midsized hybrid truck, the Toyota Tacoma hybrid. Regardless of which Toyota truck you’re looking for, you’re getting something capable and robust, regardless of whether or not it’s a hybrid. There’s no need for compromise with Toyota trucks.

Features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on many of the new vehicles on the market today, making it easy to reply to a text message or change the tunes. However, the same can’t be said of having a hybrid model offered for every vehicle. With midsized trucks, this picture is incredibly bleak. Luckily for Toyota drivers, for the 2024 model year, Tacoma is offered with a hybrid powertrain at an exceptionally reasonable price.

The iForce Max hybrid powertrain is available on several Tacoma trims, including the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, TRD Pro, and Trailhunter. Notice anything about these trims? TRD, which stands for Toyota Racing Development, trims use the hybrid powertrain to make the highest-performance Tacomas out there. Even on non-TRD trims, this means you’re doing the opposite of sacrificing performance for fuel economy with the Tacoma Hybrid.

When you look at the numbers, it doesn’t come as much of a shock, either. With 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, it packs a better punch than any of its competitors- many of whom aren’t even using a hybrid to compete.

Full-sized trucks are widely available in hybrid and even all-electric models today. The Tundra is set apart from the pack, however. With 437 horsepower and 583 pound-feet of torque, the Tacoma stands out on top of delivering excellent performance numbers while being hybrid at the same time. You shouldn’t have to sacrifice power to get a hybrid truck. Clearly, Toyota understands this better than other manufacturers. With the perfect balance of pump-conscious power, there are few reasons not to choose Toyota for your next Truck, full-sized or compact.
